Talk about a toxic relationship

Stranger figs were a super cool feature of the rainforests in Costa Rica.

Strangler figs begin life as seedlings on the tops of other trees (called host trees). Their roots grow downwards and eventually reach the ground.

The roots eventually fuse and strangle the host tree. Killing it!

Eventually the host tree rots aways and all that is left is the strangler figs hallow structure (like in the picture above).

This strategy is very effective because it allows the figs to save energy by not spend it on growing large trunks. However it's hardly fair for the host trees they strangle!

There is definitely a life lesson in there. Like don't stay in relationships with people who are like strangler figs.

Avoid people who climb all over you and take advantage of you to the point that it's toxic!
